I came across a new remix album that was too good not to share with our readers, so hopefully you’ll forgive the indulgence. As you might be aware, I am a massive fan of retro Sonic games and old game music, so the release of The Sound of Speed was a pleasant surprise. It’s a new arrangement of music from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and it’s fantastic.
The collective of remix artists take Masato Nakamura’s classic soundtrack and give it a modern twist. There’s a bit of cheesy rock, chiptunes, sound effects like springs and jumps used as instruments and a vocoder melody that sounds like Daft Punk. It builds on your nostalgia for the music, without using it as a crutch. I love it. My personal favourites are Subsonic Sparkle, Bubble Junkie and Clockwork Criminal, but I’m sure you’ll have your own!
